Anyone know the gas:eek:il ratio for a 83 70hp Evinrude? I know it is 6:1 and this may sound really stupid, but is that 6 gallons to one quart or one pint?

Sarah,

Make sure you use a TCW-3 rated OUTBOARD oil only. DO NOT use two cycle oil for chainsaws, weedeaters, etc. It is different.

What happens if you use 2-cycle oil? I'm not sure if I used the right thing or not.

Re: gas/oil ratio

hello Sarah.
TCW stands for :Two Cycle Water cooled (outboards). The other stuff is for aircooled equipment. If you have used weedeater stuff once or twice, it will not do much harm.If you make it a habit, it will ruin your outboard.

Re: gas/oil ratio

Sarah, DO NOT USE REGULAR MOTOR OIL. You sound too confused, and this board question will maybe make it worse. PLEASE go to a boat store and ask a real live person for the right oil and proper ratio. And on the subject of a pint to a gallon, when was the last time you saw a 6 gallon can? Most have rusted out years ago, and the new plastic are 5 gals. I buy a 2 1/2 gallon jug of TCW-3 at Boaters Bux, and use 14 oz to 5 gallons...a little heavy, and have had zero problems in my outboards. And I also have NEVER bought or used nothing but TCW in my chain saws, weed eaters, and two stroke motors in mini-bikes and dirt bikes. Again ZERO problems, and I have been at this a long time. But you can do as you wish.........

To make it even easier boat stores usually sell calibrated containers that makes it easy to mix the right amount of oil for odd numbers of gallons that may be needed to top off a tank.
After you do it a while it gets easy.
I always put the oil in when I get gas so I don't forget. If for some reason I don't have oil I tag the tank so I don't forget to add it.
BTW-Both my gas cans are 6 gallon.

Re: gas/oil ratio

Robby,
I actually understand now what I need, and we don't carry our fuel in as we have an on-board tank. The size of new carry on tanks doesn't really matter. The 6:1 came from the 50:1 ratio I was given earlier. If you break that down it becomes 6 gallons to 1 pint. I put 12 gallons in at a time and add one quart of oil when I do. Does that all sound right? Thanks for your help.

Hey Sarah, don't sweat the sarcasm - it's probably meant in good humor.

As for oil selection, just use any oil that's marked "TCW3". It is probably also prominently marked for "two cycle outboard motors" or such. You'll find many choices (with surprisingly wide price range) at gas stations, variety stores (e.g. Wal Mart, Fred Meyer), boat shops and hardware stores. Pick your price point, convenient location, or favorite brand and go for it and don't give it a second thought.

As for mixing: I also use built in tanks (2 @ 25 gal ea.), but often fill from 5 gallon cans, so the pt and qt. thing doesn't work for me. I have a container for measuring oil on which I've marked for 5 and 10 gallon increments at a little richer than 50:1. (~13.5 and 27 oz). I err on the rich side thinking it's better if I'm a little inaccurate in filling or pouring the oil. Even at the pump, for simplicity, I almost always just use 5 or 10 gallon increments and accurately dispense the oil for that amount. So, often my tanks are a couple gallons short of full. If I really want to top off to the last 2 or 3 gallons, I just use the 5 gallon mark on the oil container, and call it good. The overall mixture is going to be close enough until I top off again - especially since the most common mixture the manufacturers use - one pint to 6 gallons - is actually 48:1, not 50:1.

I guess my point is I find it so much easier and less messy just to do this "two increment" system rather than figure out and measure the number of ounces needed for an exact amount of gas every time I fill up.

For all you oil mixers.
K-mart and Walmart have a plastic bottle specially made for mixing fuel.It has the formula printed on the side of the bottle. It is made by "Sea Sense" and is called "mixing bottle"
On the top of the side it says the type of mix,1:100, 1:50 etc. On the side, right under the mix you want to use,it has the number of gallons printed.
Let's say you pumped 14 gallons and you want to mix it so it's 1:50. You look for 1:50 on the top of the side and for the number 14 on the side right under it.Now just fill this bottle with oil up to where it says 14 and that is the exact amount of oil you need to mix in with your fuel.
All of this for less than 2 dollars.
