Whadda Da Ya Think? Will the rising prices of gas create a glut of used boats with big engines? Do you think dealers will discount their present stocks? If you can withstand the rising gas prices, could late summer be the time to buy? Just wondering?
Stalker ;)

NS, while it may keep boat usage down, it will most certaitnly keep you/us from our distant trips. Out here we have to travel to get to a decent body of water, unless you put in the salt. With the downsize of autos and trucks, gone are the towing capacities too. Truly blessed are you that live near clean clear and plentiful water. I have had alot of fun in small boats, on small water. I guess we will all have to spend more time on the beach or fishing...sl

I think there has been a steady price decline on internal "big engine" boats over the past few years. Who the heck can justify spending $300+ per day to keep a pair of big blocks fed? However, there are always those fortunate few where money is no object or need to do so (like charters).

I doubt you'll see much (if any) price reductions on the big outboards, though.

The price of gas is sure in the back of my mind when I make a decision on where to go.

Look back into the 1970s when gas prices soared. Powerboat sales slumped big time and so did private aircraft sales. By 1978 it was a buyers market for both. However, sailboat sales skyrocketed and that market boomed for about 10 yrs.

This is why we have decided to ply the waters of the Erie Canal this year. There are many Canal
Communities along the length of it that have spent millions developing the canal front properties to attract boaters. We hope that by hauling back on the throttle to keep her at 10 we won't have to spend the big bucks to enjoy some cruising. "Red sky at night skippers"

I heard sales at the NY Jacob Javits boat show were good for high end boats and poor for mid range boats. This supports the idea that the rich guys could care less about higher prices at the pump while the rest of us are having second thoughts. I'm actually contemplating getting out all together before it's to late. I've been boating for 6yrs and am on my 3rd, bought brand new, dream boat..2003 wellcraft 290 coastal. I'd be lost with out it but 225 gallons for a fill up aint fun.
