IWe have a 91 Bayliner Capri 4.3L mercury mercruiser 6 cyl. Is it common to smell a little bit of gas in the oil , This is the first time the oil has been changed since we have owned her..The oil is thick like 25W-40 and no signs of water in oil eigther , We did use the boat last season. Any input would be appreciated....Thanks:cool:

I would change the oil and then watch it closely. Paying attention to oil pressure and the oil level. If the pressure seems low or the level increases you may have a fuel pump problem.

If the oil level was not over full the gas smell is not as worrisome as the thick oil. That engine should use a 5w 30 or so. I'd change it along with the filter run it for a while and re check it. BTW welcome to iboats.

There should not be a problem using the oil he has in it now. Merc is recommending 20w40.

Thanks for the input!! I had fun today , changed the plugs , oil filter , oil etc..I love working on the boat. We bought a mercury mercruiser boat manual (SELOC) for our 91 bayliner capri 2050cx. I am having a blast..We have replace the upholstry, carpet, polished the out side and it almost looks storeroom new..Now I am learning every thing I can about the engine too..(Did my own winterizing) tune her up today and fired her up..Muffs on ofcourse..With the book and DEFINITLY with IBOAT members I am on the right track !! THANKS ALL.

Check you carb, sound's like your or the carb is flowing gas into the engine aka oil, a age old problem............ looks right at the float or a over rich choke...;)

Thanks Tail Gunner I am a little leary about messing with the carb. The yellow/clear tube you all are talking about going to the fuel pump has been cut with a screw in the end of it ???? for what reason would they do that.? The engine runs Great she purrs like a kitten..I keep an eye on her constantly.oil etc....any input :)

There is a good possibility that the PO replaced the fuel pump with an automotive one. It would not have any place for the tube to connect to.

THIS IS A HUGE NO NO!!

If the diaphram in the pump ruptures (and eventually it will) you will have raw gas in your bilge. This is a sure way to get the insurrance to replace your boat, if you survive the explosion.

I Do Believe The Carb Is A Mercarb....according To The Book It's What It Looks Like , With One Idle Needle.

Re: Gas Smell In Oil ?

Which end is the line plugged on the carb side or the fuel pump side?? The previous owner may have plugged the line because the pump was already leaking? or because they installed an automotive pump? Go buy a new marine fuel pump and install it, and reconnect the line, runs from the carb to the pump. I would not use the boat until this problem is fixed.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Gas Smell In Oil ?

I do believe it is a mercarb , I looked in the book I have and it does look to be the same , to answer the question the screw in the hose is coming from the carb, 3" yellow/clear hose with a screw stuck in the end. (question) is the fuel pump located under the engine between the oil pan ???

OK now I am really confused.. I saw exactly what you are talking about on the starb. side and your not going to believe this but where the fuel pump whole that you are talking about , there is no pump there I see the mounting part on the starb side , the shape of where the fuel pump should be with two bolt wholes too but no pump, I know this sounds crazy , But true , the mounting part is there but no pump there..Just where it looks like the pump should be..

Follow the fuel line from the carb, or the fuel line from the tank and it will lead you to the pump. Maybe the pump has been replaced with an electric one??? If it has, then a leaking diaphram is not your problem.

If there is no block off plate with two bolts, Then the PO probably replaced motor and modified fuel system to electric. Sounds like a few short cuts have been performed.
