Re: gas spewing from hoses on valve covers

Wow,,,

As already mentioned, one would definitely think mechanical fuel pump issue and a direct flow into the crankcase..
Now if he comes back and states it's an electric pump... The only way the fuel has to get into the crankcase is via the cylinders etc.

Ive drained engines that had near or = to a 50/50 mixture of gas and oil. Both times were do to bad/stuck injectors in -20 weather and someone literally cranking on the engine for 45-60 min (never starting)...

But for the oil / fuel mixture to be coming out of the valve covers , we are talking "several gallons" of fuel..

Again, WOW - that's the first Ive heard anyone getting there.

From a different angle, as long as the bearings/lubricated surfaces aren't all scored, the engine will be pretty clean internally.....

My fingers are crossed for you captgeorge.

Re: gas spewing from hoses on valve covers

Wow, lots of discusion here, sorry I have been away so long iv been working on the boat. to answer the main question it is an electric in line fuel pump and is new with the exact same #s as the original. I have found the source of the problem and was as suspected I left the gasket ring off of the power valve. No I did not have time to check this for sure befor I posted last night due to back yard mech and no light not wanting to chance a sprak with that amount of fuel hanging around. I did not crank and crank the motor it sucked that much fuel in about two min of total run time at full throttle. I would have never guessed that would be possable, the only reason for suspecting a problem with the power valve is that it looked to be the bigest through way in the carb.
I started off by draining the oil this morning and it ran out like straight gas no oil at all, it was that deluted. It was fresh oil when starting I changed it my self.
As mentioned when I purchased the boat it was a hurican boat and full of water. best thing being that the oil, water was never drained so oxigen had no chance to do its thing. I then filled with new oil and turned over with the plugs out to lube coat every thing and blow what might be ontop of the cylinders out.

The boat now runs and has great compression. Im feeling preaty lucky to have this out come. However the carb is still not working properly. the boat fires and idles with out hesitation but will not run past idle. I have adjested the needles starting with two turnes out and working in and out with out any luck. it acts corectly going two far in will not run and two far out floods. the carb was in bad shape having been flooded in water and open to air. You may not believe how nasty the carb was compleatly incrusted in with salt like growth. chem dip would not touch it, I soaked it in CLR over night and it came out shiny but with etching in every thing that was part of the cast. All jets and parts made of metal other than the carb housing looked fine, so i bought a kit and put it together. It seems that this chance did not work so I am going to be looking for a new 2bl holly carb. If any one knows where I can find a great deal on one of these I would be greatful or if any one has any ideas as to what could be wrong with the carb i have? Thank you to all for your responses and help this is a great forum.

I'm sorry, but I can't buy that explanation. A missing gasket on a power valve will not cause that much leakage. With an electric fuel pump, I find your problem totally improbable and impossible. It just can't happen.

i have seen this i had a guy helping me change a power valve and left the gasket off it dumps fuel into the intake as fast as the pump can supply it. if you have a electric pump that the oil pressure switch is bad on you would get alot of fuel dumped in the engine and it would go past the rings pretty quick.does your pump run when ever the key is on?

So you think enough gas would leak past the piston rings and not hydro-lock the engine Jackson??? Thats pretty amazing. Dont think that could happen given the engine has good compression.

i find it pretty hard to swallow to. If i took a head of my motor of any size... pulled the piston down to BDC, and filled the entire cylinder up with gas.... I could do it tonight and that clyinder would still be at least half full by morning.

Re: gas spewing from hoses on valve covers

the pump only runs when starting not with key on but when the starter is cranking and it is my understanding that it only runs at the drop of pressure...guessing that means when ever the float is open. but I can asure you that the only thing changed is that I put an gasket ring on the power valve and I am not flooding the motor with gas, not in the oil and not blowing out of the the vents on the valve covers. So any one know where to find a great deal on this carb?
