gas station pumps accurate?

Just wondering how you guys feel about the accuracy of the gallons meter on gas pumps at gas stations, markets, etc? I have two 6 gal tanks, usually on the way to the lake I like to top them off from my last outing. One may need 5 or 6 gal and maybe the other only 2 gal. I diligently add my 2cycle marine oil at 50/1 via my ratio mixing cup for the amount of gas added to each tank. Do you think that is ok to trust those pumps like that??? Or should I be doing something different?

Hell yes, I would trust those pumps. In Florida, the pumps are constantly being checked and rechecked by our Division of Standards. READ THIS They did 230,000+ checks in just one year. Yeah, I trust them implicitly.

should be fine because they are tested and verified by the equivalent of your weights and measures dept or local town hall ...provided you are generous not mean no problem ..you could empty them out occasionally ( drain one into the other ) and start afresh

Those meters are more accurate than your measurement of the oil to add.

There was a big scam running here in Mn a few years back. People [dishonest gas station owners] were buying a computer chip, black market, that would rip off the consumer on many gas purcheses. The chip would pump an accurate amount if the amount pumped was a perfect 5 or 10 gallons I believe it was, as thats what the Dept of weights and measures used for their testing. but odd amounts would npt be accurate.

One way to find out. Bring your own gallon jug once in awhile to check the gas pump. You'll be surprised how accurate they are.

The pumps are accurate in my oppinion. However what I have never understood is why @ 50to1 1 gallon gets 3 oz oil and 2 gallons gets 5 oz of oil.....it's something like that....I am not looking at the chart on the jug of oil right now, but none the less it is not equal as the gallons increase?????

Because 1 gal @ 50:1 is 2.56oz and 2 gal is 5.12 oz, 3 gal is 7.68 oz. They just round to the nearest whole oz.. Or 3, 5, or 8 oz in my examples. It's close enough. How many of us have measuring cups accurate to 1/100 of an ounce or even 1/10 of an once?

I used one of those $3 measuring plastic jug from WalMart with all the markings for different fuel-oil mix ratio and levels based on the amount of fuel you are mixing both in liters and gallons.

Re: gas station pumps accurate?

Sounds like most everyone believe the pumps are reasonably accurate, makes me feel better about using them. Being a 2 stroke dirt bike rider and having had some pretty nice bikes I've always been pretty anal about my ratios being right on.. I use a clear plastic ratio bottle with a screw on cap to keep out dirt, water etc when its not being used. I also seriously try and avoid mixing different brands of oil together..
