Well new member here on the forums so hello all! haha but i was filling my gas tank on a 1993 sunbird corsair 198 with a 5 gallon plastic gas can. As i was filling the plastic extender nozzle fell off and went down into my gas tank. I searched all over the internet trying to find out if there is something i could do or if it would hurt it but i found nothing. I was wondering if anyone on here had this happen to them ( probably not haha ) or if anyone had any input to this. Someone at the boat store said it shouldnt hurt it and just float around in the tank but i wanted to hear some other opinions. below is a picture of the gas can and the pastic nozzle.

Re: Gas Tank Question

Welcome to iboats first of all. It probably won't hurt anything but it may occasionally get hooked up in the float and throw off your fuel gauge reading. You could try getting a pair of long needle nose pliers and fishing it out if it bugs you. Maybe tie a string to them before you do it though so you don't wind up with two things in there (I've seen it happen)

The plastic nozzle is big enough that it will not clog anything. About the only negative I would see is that it might jam the gauge if your tank has a functioning one.

You can try one of those 2 foot long spring grabber things.

Re: Gas Tank Question

It's obviously gas resistant, so no worry about it disintegrating and possibly clogging something up. If it was me, I'd open up the tank (remove the sending unit), and get it out of there. It would bug me too much knowing it was in there, and it will also render the portable gas tank useless without it.

Magic fingers. or a piece of wire with bent hook. can't be that hard to fish it out.

Ayuh,.... I'd sooner think that tube is hung up in the fill hose, 'n will give ya headaches during fillin' the tank, til ya take it apart, 'n remove it....

+1 on the extender tube being caught up in the filler hose . . .

so be careful, next time you fill up, you might get splashed.

Best to try to get it out of there. (somehow) Caution is the word. . . .

Re: Gas Tank Question

If it's down in the tank, fish it out from the sender.
if it's in fill tube, and if it impedes filling, try the coat hanger/grabber first, and then maybe you can remove the fill tube at the tank, the fill cap at he boat, and remove it that way--probably not, though, they are usually foamed in.

Otherwise I wouldn't tell anyone.

Re: Gas Tank Question

I would think it's still in the hose like the man said ^ and didn't make it to the tank.....unless you kept pourin the fuel in after it came off....Time to go fishin! ....Did you look down the fill neck with a flashlight??

Re: Gas Tank Question

Thank you all for your input and yes i tried look down with a flash light and could see nothing. Im new to boating so trying to get to the tank will probably not be an option. If it shouldnt hurt anything i will probably end up just leaving it in there unless i get a professional to do it.

will probably try the hanger idea to see if i can get anything.

+1 on it getting jammed in one of the several twists and turns many hoses take on the way to the tank. See if you can find the hose and check out its condition. If it's at all deteriorating from age you now have one more reason to change it out.

Re: Gas Tank Question

I tried the hanger thing and got nothing. so im assuming it is in the tank or hung up somewhere. Hopefully it does not cause problems in the long run.

Re: Gas Tank Question

If you don't have trouble filling I don't think you'll have any trouble just run it and have fun. If you get the chance at a latter date and can get to the tube going to the tank and can remove it give that a shot as it may well be stuck in there somewhere.

Re: Gas Tank Question

See my post above (#4), open the sending unit, and get it out. 10 minute job (if you sending unit is readily accessible).
