Gas Tank Reconditioning

Just acquired a boat that has 'sat inside a shed' for four years. I have to remove & replace the deck at which time the gas tank will be accessable. Should I consider getting it reconditioned? Replace with new? Forget it...just drain it, put in some fresh gas and give it a go?

Depends on the tank... inspect it for rust leaks cracks.... if it looks sound clean it up and clean the inside and go for it.

One of the other Forum participants mentioned a tank cleaner called Starbrite. Have you any experience with this?

None with that.

Pressure test it.

You never know it just might be clean and fine.

I have used some kerosene and a big bag of 1/2 nuts. Pour in enough just to coat the tank (maybe a quart or so) and add the nuts ...... shake and shake ...... then you can pour out the entire mess. The nuts are big enough to retrieve and have sharp enges which cuts up corrosion.

You can go a step further and recoat the tank if needed.

Don't make extra work unless it is needed.
