I was wondering what the purpose of the gas tank vent is? Is it supposed to be in a certain position (opened or closed) while running? Or does it make any difference?

Shane
As fuel leaves the tank, air must be allowed in to take its place. Vent should be open when running. If vent is closed, and fuel is removed from tank, a vacuum will be created inside. I've seen automotive tanks collapse from this condition....
Oh, well I sure hate it when that happens. I was wondering the other day, why my new Walmart plastic gas tank looked like someone stepped on it from the top and the bottom. I guess that answers my question. I thought it was because it was so cold. Maybe that's also why my engine has been running so much better with this last tank of gas. I'll have to check and see if my vent has been open this time.

Thanks a lot everyone. You guys are great!!
Shane
