gasket material ?

I am Rebuilding a 92 model 175 fastrike and when I began buying parts I found that the Johnson / Evenrude manual gave me the names of Bombadeirs products such as Gel seal gasket material. My question is ... can I use other products such as Loctites gasket maker? I use this stuff at work in our maint. department and it seems to be pretty much the same. It does not harden up and when I first took the crankcase cover off I noticed that the material looked just like what I used at work. Also I already have Parker O-ring grease, will this be OK for my o-rings on the head covers. What about the RTV substance on the head covers. Can I use the products I already have on hand or is there something special about Bombadeirs products that I should know about?

Loctite flange and gasket maker same as gell seal, black rtv for heads

Gel Seal PN 324073 is an anaerobic sealer and you would need Loctite 518 where that is listed in the repair manual.

The Mercury Loctite 518 kit is PN 92125642. The Sierrra Loctite kit is 18-9003. Try to make sure that the kit is new stock.

Your new OEM cylinder head gaskets will probably have a warning not to use a sealant as they already have it on the gasket and it won't work if you use another sealant.

Can I buy the black rtv at my local hardware like lowes or home depot or do I have to order it from Bombadeir ? It seemed a little thicker than standard rtv. Is there anything special about the black rtv ? The cylinders have an o-ring groove around them and I was going to use o-ring grease to hold them in place during assembly, that is why I was asking about Parker o-ring grease. I talked to Bombadeirs tech support today on the phone about using o-rings that I can get through industrial maint. I can get the best of the best of viton high pressure rings at a much better price than buying them through Bombadeir. The technician told me that standard rubber o-rings would be just fine. The grease I hope, will hold them in place. Any suggestions are well appreciated.

Ezeke is correct on the 518 but use the loctite primer on crankcase halfs, use 3m Black RTV for heads. I put my orings on with lite coat of oil pulled thru my finger tips, a little stretching and they stay on fine.The way I do it is:
Install pistons, roll block on side,wipe head and block surface with acetone to degrease,install orings,apply rtv, put 2 bolts in center of head and lower on to cylinder, finger start these 2 bolts, install remaining bolts,lightly hand tighten, torque in spec's in 3 steps

You got me, Faztbullet. I forgot about the o-ring seals on those heads.

The Merc and Sierra kits come with the primer included. The actual Loctite 518 is the same material as Gel Seal.

I just had a list of subsitute supplys but this is what is use from Promarine I heard the Permatex Avation sealer is good and bought some from Carquest but the "peanut butter"(235) is still better and cheaper
