The guy who had my job before I did left behind a tube of gasket sealant in the shop. Its a black gooey substance called "Permatex form-a gasket sealant". Wondering: should I use this stuff on the cyl head gasket? No instructions on the tube. Anybody have experience with similar stuff or insight?

Re: gasket sealant

There are several types of Form a gasket on the market, not sure of which one you have. Generally I do not use any type of gasket sealant on head gaskets. Sealant depending on the type can deteriate real quickly under pressure and temperatures in the cylinder. Most head gasket material is made to with stand the pressure and temperature without using a gasket sealant.

Re: gasket sealant

OB head gaskets always dry. Is the Permatex hardening or non-hardening? Non-hardening can be used on LU bolt threads, water pump fasteners, zincs, etc. to prevent sw corrosion. Hardening may be used sparingly on water pump housing to wear plate joint for better seal.

Re: gasket sealant

That black goo is designed to replace a gasket, not seal gaskets. Use only when a gasket is not available. Also be aware that you should not use any sealant on a 4-stroke engine unless it is approved by the manufacturer. Damage can occur to the electronic sensors if you use the wrong gasket sealant. If your not sure what the goo is used for, I would dispose of it immediatly.

Kid, before you think about putting that goo on a gasket, you should try cleaning up some gasket surfaces some rookie smeared full of this stuff....it will help you use it sparingly!
