Gasketcinch....

I am trying to rebuild the carbs on my 1972 1150 Mercury, and there is a hard, red sealant on some of the screws and caps which my manual calls "Gasketcinch". I can't seem to find this and was wonder what other people are using. Any other advice on rebuilding these carbs would be appreciated as I am not an experienced mechanic.

Buy rebuild kits, which will have all the gaskets you need and the needle/seats.

Ideally you will want to remove the welch plugs and clean out all internal passages.

Float height setting is they key to success.

Thank you, guys. I do have the kits and a CD copy of a Mercury manual, but the pictures come out somewhat blurry. I ordered the SELOC manual as well. I am at the stage of trying to figure out what all comes out of/ off the carbs to clean them.

Gasgacinch is available at some auto parts stores (try Napa). It is very similar to rubber cement and costs about $5/can.

The air-cooled VW crowd (of which I am a memeber) uses that stuff to seal the engine cases together.
