Hi everyone!

I've got a 135hp Evinrude v4 crossflow that I'm planning to overhaul. My block needs to be bored, but instead of spending the money for that, I'm moving over to a good block I came across. So, as I move all my parts over to the new block, I need to know what seals and gaskets to buy so I won't be stranded. Also what recomendations do you have for me to do while I have the motor open. I don't have much money for expensive parts, but I'll do what absolutely should and needs to be done to get it going.

Here's what I know I need:

Gasket set
Head gaskets
Crank case seal

What else? I'll be gone till Sunday, but hope you guys will be able to help me out! I'll check back then.

Thanks!

What year is that 135, if it is a 1973, there are a few things to watch out for? Give us a model number.

Also a complete powerhead gasket set is cheaper than buying individual gaskets

oh, sorry forgot to say it was a 1973! I do plan to get the gasket set Walker. Thanks for the tip.

I'm sorry I don't have the model number here, however, this is the model for the "Johnson" version of my motor. They're the same for all practical purposes. 135ESL73

Thanks!

My main proplem is that the boat won't idle well. Have to rev high and jam it into gear to avoid it stalling. I'm worried I'll kill the lower unit doing this. Otherwise I'd just keep running it this way. A friend suggested that my idle prob. might be the crankcase seal not holding pressure. Is it possible this is my idle problem and not a problem with the cylinders? Compression is about %10 varience. Carbs recently rebuilt. I only get up to 34 mph, but I'm fine with that as long as it runs!

Have you removed the thermostats? OMCs don't idle well unless they get to operating temp.

On changing the block - There is more to it than seals. You will still need to take the block that you came across to a machine shop to get inspected and get the cylinders measured with a micrometer. Even if the bores are OK I would think you would want to put in new rings at a minimum.

Yes, solittle, for some reason I failed to add new rings to the list! Ikes.

I'll get the replacement block cleaned at a machine shop, and have a machinest friend check the cylinders and pistons.

I haven't removed the t-stats, but it idles worse when run for a while then it does cold (unless it never is getting warm enough).

How would you go about safely testing the t-stats?
