I live in the Galapagos Islands where the only gasoline available is 80 octane. Is there any 4 cycle or direct injection model from Yamaha or Mercury that will get along with 80 octane long term?

Re: gasoline octane

i think you will be ok with 80 they tell you to run 83 i think that you will see it says no less then 80 or 83 octane. even though people think they are getting 83 octane from a pump they might be getting more it depends on the delivery truck drive if he has 93 left in the truck after filling there 93 tanks he can sell the rest of the 93 he has left on the truck to the station for the cost of 83 and put it in there 83 octane tanks.thats why it says no less then 83 octane in small writing.ok with all that said i think you will be ok with 80 octane fuel

Re: gasoline octane

I think Wayne is confused about 80, 83 and 87 octane ratings from US pumps and rated by US system.

All of the late model engines I have seen require 87 octane (US System) minimum and many recommend premium, which can be anything above 90 octane.

30-40 years ago we often ran "white" gas (Amoco unleaded, 80 octane) in outboards of the time, so I would expect a 70s or earlier vintage engine to do well on your 80 octane.

I wouldn't try it in any late model engine without specific okay from the engine maker.

The most likely to approve it, I think, would be Tohatsu, who sell their bulletproof engines everywhere there is water.

Good luck. :)

Re: gasoline octane

You can buy additives that increase the octane. Or you can mix it with some aviation fuel.

Re: gasoline octane

Be advised that there are differnet ways to calculate octance in different parts of the world. Currently in the USA, if you look at the pumps you will see an octane sticker that says
(R + M)/2 which is the average of 2 different methods; R (Research method) and M (Motor Octane Method) for calculating octane. When I was a kid in the 60's Sunoco used to offer 103 octane and most high octanes were listed at around 100 octane. Then they changed in the 70's to the method above and they all dropped into the low 90's or upper 80's. So you need to know the method used or you may be comparing apples and oranges.
