Gateway EV700 monitor issue

My wife's desktop computer has a Gateway EV700 monitor (that's what the front of it says, anyway). Out of the blue 3 days ago, she turned the screen on (the computer was left on as usual, monitor was turned off, as usual) and it was a weird almost psychadelic looking image. She banged the top of the monitor and the image was normal. She claims she checked all cables for proper connection. Of course the issue is getting worse. I have found that pounding is not necessary. If I turn the monitor and/or tilt it back a little, the image will be normal and stay that way for a long time, or until I accidently bump the screen or turn the monitor. It's almost like a loose connection in the base where it swivels.
My questions, is that possible to have a loose connection there? Can it be effectively repaired? Will it be cost effective?

I would guess that you might have a cold solder joint or maybe just a connector that has increased in resistance as a result of thermal cycling over a period of time.I encourage any person with a system that runs every day to leave it running,that goes especially for CRT monitors as there is a big range of temperatures from off to extended periods of running.The socketed componants suffer from "thermal creep" when exposed to a lot of heat/cool cycles and is best avoided if at all possible.This applies to nearly all electronic equipment.
Also your monitor will degauss itself each time you turn it on from a cold state and your problem could be a fault in that circuit.It is controlled by a thermistor which increases in resistance as it gets warm from the current flowing through it which effectively turns the degaussing coil off as the monitor warms up.
If you are so inclined you might remove the cover to the monitor and reseat the connectors that you can reach and that might be enough to fix it.Ron G

Yep, two of them, have been there for years. And they are functioning perfectly.

Be very careful if you decide to perform surgery. There are lethal voltages in there, possibly even if it unplugged.

Indeed,there are high voltages to consider,the CRT is a large capacitor and when operating will have 15,000 or more volts on it which remains on the anode for a long time before bleeding off.
Your problem will undoubtably be caused by the speakers magnetic field on the CRT which is supposed to be degaussed when the monitor is started.
I would not spend any time with it,they can be had for free these days in Craigslist or Freecycle.Ron G

She hasn't said it yet, but I am CERTAIN that my wife will say "we need a new monitor." So, I'll guess that I won't be given the opportunity to even diagnose it, properly.
Thanks for your responses, if i decide to repair it, I at least have an idea what to look for and were to go with it.

If its a CRT, I would get rid of it - its not worth repairing. You can buy a cheap LCD that will have much better resolution and contrast ratio, for very little money. It also will take up a fraction of the desk space that the CRT does.

Thanks all. As an early Christmas present, I bought my wife a new Dell 18.5" LCD monitor for $100 yesterday. And you are right, it takes up way less space, and weighs nothing compared to the other. We'll either give away the CRT or take to a recycling center here in town.

I did that to got wiffee an LCD monitor for christmas...a 20 inch LG now I have to buy her some speakers as the old crt had speakers in the stand....err humbug
The monitor was 149..then the ECO tax 12.03 then 2 taxes on that...so much for a good deal you guys in the states have this stu...pid ECO tax yet

I lucked out, my wife had separate external speakers. And yep, with sales tax, the total was $107.99 (8% sales tax).
