Gauge Question

OK, this is going to sound dumb. But my dealer told me that I can use ONLY Yamaha gauges for a Yamaha motor. I have a 2003 four stroke 90 horse motor. I want to add a tach and trim gauge. He sells the things but I KNOW I can get cheaper gauges at another outlet. I got sispicious when he said I had to use a Yanaha fuel gauge as well, WHAT? Says I? Why on earth would that be? Well, you get the idea. So, simple question, can I use another brand of gauge for a tach and trim for a Yamaha motor? If so, any recommendations? (Secondary question, I am under the impression that I can't use my old tachometer (which was attached to a Johnson 1990 88 horse) for a four stroke engine. That true? (You may have noted from my last post that this particular dealer leaves a bit to be desired as far as service goes!)

Re: Gauge Question

Yamaha makes the best gauges in the business. They have multi-function they offer every thing you would need in two gauges. There is a warning system in the tach. oil and temp. I would not run that engine without the warning system in place. That engine is expensive you need the correct gauges to go with it. We always express this with a customer on a new engine. Most dealership talk only of the price of the engine. New Yamaha's outboards are priced without a prop, control box, control cables, key switch, harness and gauge or gauges. Most dealership price the engine alone and then tell you all the other items you need to repower. The engine price is the engine in a box with battery cables, oil and fuel line only. And two strokes need an oil tank kit also.
