I have a '73 Johnson 115 that recently lost the lower unit due to an age related leak. Is there any way to tap for a gauge/check fluid temp/etc. to help me know there is lube and not water in the lower unit, especially when running? I'd hate to have a loss like this happen again. Any help is appreciated in advance.
Bob

Check your owner's manual. No way to check LU while running.

PS: You can check level with motor vertical by removing the vent (upper) LU screw. If fluid doesn't come out, use a paper clip as a dipstick to see if more is needed (it should be up to the vent hole).

You can check for water by letting motor sit vertical overnight and removing BOTTOM LU screw for just a moment. If there's water, it'll be out first and obvious.

WildeOne,

Thanx for the advice on checking the oil! My boat repair facility offered the same advice when I asked them about checking the oil level.

Now I'm on the water and enjoying the last moments of Michigan summer!

Better Boatin' Bob
