I am just curious on how to fix a broken speed odometer? I have a 1991 VIP Mericruiser I/O. I heard that they may be a pitot in the lower unit that may have gotten clogged/blocked. Or is it an electrical problem? I am also having trouble with my RPM gauge. Once i get the motor up to about 3500 rpms the gauge will max out with no rev of the engine. could i possibally have a bad ground/power? I am looking for advise and any is appriciated. Thank you.

Re: Gauges

The two problems are not related whatsoever. The speedometer is not an electrical item. It works by water pressure compressing air in a tube that runs from the lower unit on the drive or from a separate pitot sticking down at the back of the boat. Disconnect the tube at the speedometer and if water comes out as you run the boat, the tube and pitot are not clogged. Remember, the boat needs to be moving above 10 MPH for this to work. If no water comes out, the tube is plugged or pinched, or the pitot at that engine is clogged with debris. As for the tach, you need to ensure the connections are clean and tight. You might also look at the back of the tach for a calibration dial. Note the current setting. Then GENTLY rotate the dial back and forth several times to burnish the contacts. Then set it back to the original setting.
