Unfortunately Craigslist has turned up quite a few real winners lately.
It seems every one is worse than the last one.

If I end up with the boat back in my driveway, I'll know the whole thing was a scam.

If it's not and he really did forfeit the boat to the marina, we're all better off in that he won't be on the water.

Being a Police Officer and dealing with stupid people every day, this post still makes me grin. That is one of the funniest thing I have heard of. Not sure if I could keep a straight face if I were in your shoes.

no doubut. I had a guy get mad at me because the Kayak I had listed sold 20 minutes before he showed up.

and last year I had an old Honda parts bike listed. complete bike, no title $100 OBO. this guy comes over and proceeds to tell me he thought it was going to be in better shape and he would take it off my hands for nothing.

I sent him on his way and parted the bike out myself and made $700 :D

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

It just got better, the idiot that took the boat came by today while I was outside and tells me that he really didn't want the boat, what he'd rather have is a lawn tractor. He then proposed a trade of the boat for my garden tractor.
I was dumbfounded at the request. My first reply was "How long has it been since they let you out?" I made it real clear that if I wanted to give away my garden tractor, I'd have listed a free garden tractor not a boat.
He wasn't the least bit insulted, he just couldn't figure out why I wouldn't trade him. I told the guy that if I wanted that boat I'd have kept it, if he don't like it or if he felt he wasn't capable of fixing it, to just give it away. He then tells me he no longer has the boat, he gave or traded it to some other guy that don't want it either. He then tells me that guy has a boat that he wants and can trade a lawn mower for. I asked him what he figured that all has to do with me and his reply is that I had a garden tractor he could trade for this other boat.
I asked him how he figured a $2100 garden tractor equals a free boat and his reply was that the boat could be worth more if all restored. I told him to restore and we'd talk then. This of course from a guy that took a freebie boat to a marina to get fixed and didn't feel he should pay.

I told the guy that I have no plans of getting rid of my tractor, I don't want the boat back and really had no interest in doing any business with him after last weeks conversation when he implied that I was responsible for the bill at the supposed marina. After I made it real clear the tractor wasn't for sale or trade, he then asks what else I had to trade for the boat.

I pretty much think he just don't play with a full deck of cards or he's hoping to get something else for nothing. For all I know he took the boat down to the river and tried to float it without a plug and sank it. Either way it don't matter to me. The boat had out of state numbers on it and hadn't been registered in over 30 years. For all I know, the boat may be at a marina being held in lieu of payment or at the bottom of a lake or river somewhere.
I really don't care what he did with it. I was a boat with a lot of potential but certainly not worth all this aggravation. Although it is somehow strangely entertaining in an odd way. The terminally stupid can be pretty funny to observe at times. I just wish he'd find someplace else to be entertaining now.
When I asked him why he didn't just fix the boat up himself, he said he didn't have any money and couldn't afford a motor for it. I almost told him to just take two broomsticks and a bed sheet and only go out on windy days but I somehow figured he might take me seriously and go out and get himself or maybe someone else killed or drowned. I just pictured it making the 11 o'clock news, "Boater lost at sea".
Though for not having any money, he was driving a fairly new small SUV.

I almost asked him if he'd swap the car he was driving for the contents of my trash can at the curb but I really didn't think he'd get it.

This time though I did take down his license plate number just in case.
After about an hour or so of him following me around the yard as I cut the grass, with him shouting over the tractor motor, I pretty much got fed up with the dumb banter.
My final words to him today were that if he really wanted to get rid of that boat I'd take it back for a fee of $200. He didn't flinch at that, I don't think what I said totally sank in. When he left I told him to make sure if he brought the boat back to bring cash, I don't take checks. I figured that if he's dumb enough to go for that one, it will cover the dump fees and all my aggravation. Maybe if he thinks returning will cost him money, he'll stay away.
He made no mention this time about any charges owed, he never even mentioned the last story at all.

Man, you better hope this nut case doesn't come back with a gun wanting that tractor or anything else.

Reminds me of Joe Piscopo's SNL character - "I'm from Jersey! Are you from Jersey?" :D:D:D

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

I guess that the only thing that I can think of is to never give anything away to a stranger for free. Chagre a penny, or a dollar. That way you have a legal binding contract of sale. Even if its just a handshake agreement. He bought and paid for the boat, the price is not an issue from a legal standpoint. Not that I think that it will be an issue in this case.....but you never know. Stupid people seem to always know someone in the legal system don't they.

Watch him sue you in small claims court stating that you only loaned him the boat......lol

If he comes back.....call the cops, and give them everything you have....

If he trespasses on your property to talk to you, can't you shoot him down there?....lol

Reelfishin, are you sure that some of your buddies aren't playing a practical joke on you? This is too surreal to be actually happening.

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

Dude....
This is so unbelievable I'm tempted to think you are making it up...
First of all, what kind of car was he driving? You said he said that he drives the kind of cars that "don't need oil changes anymore." I'm also wondering how old he was? Someone here mentioned that people don't have any sense of personal responsibility anymore. I'm seeing this in the 20-30something range of people more right now.
Lastly, this is the type of person that idiot warnings were created for. I once read a newspaper article on this that was totally hilarious. I tried to find it on the internet to no avail. The story writer mentioned a Superman suit he saw one time that had this warning on it: THE WEARING OF THIS COSTUME WILL NOT ENABLE THE WEARER TO FLY. Maybe you should find a costume like this, remove the warning sticker, and give it to the guy telling him you feel bad about his predicament, so here, here's a Halloween present. Then hope he puts it on and tries to "fly" off his roof.

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

reel....

there's an hour of your life you'll never get back. I can't believe you let him follow you around without having someone escort him off the property.

"Maybe if he thinks returning will cost him money, he'll stay away."

Honestly, no offense here, but people like that don't get the message unless it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. conversing with him for an hour does not give the message to get out. The ONLY way he will stay away is if you tell him to stay away, go home and not come back - "you are not welcome on my property".

Why be a nice guy to a nuisance? it's like reasoning with a drunk (or a rock - pick one).

Unfortunately, you are going to see this guy again. You invited him back - even if you didn't mean it - i guarantee, that's what he heard. Next time - don't even say hello, just go in the house and call the police.

In his mind, I am sure he thinks you are a new friend. keep your neighbors and family safe from this freak... remove him from your property before he makes harm from getting pissed at you.

All I can say is WOW, he's some SPECIAL!

I think if you'd offered the tractor for his SUV, you might've had a new truck.

He wanted to trade your free boat for your lawn mower. Priceless.

You said he followed you around on your mower. I would not have turned my back on him.

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

wait one minute, was this guys name jason, if so he bought a car from me, sold a 1985 ford for $500, a couple years ago, he came back a few days later wondering if i had a spair tire for it, then a couple weeks after that asking for the jack and tire tool. then somthing went wrong with the motor a few months latter and wanted me to see if i could figure out wat was wrong with it, when i declined he wanted his money back. called for a couple weeks after, thought i was going to have to call police. havent heard from him in a while. if you see him again ask him if he ever got that car fixed that he bought a couple years ago:D:D

my dad always said the "world needs idiots too".. i guess it's to make the rest of us feel better about the minor stupid things we all do.

Re: gave boat away and guy wants money back!

certainly not worth all this aggravation
I'm not so sure about that. I've got way more out of this deal than I have in it in entertainment alone. Tell him I've got a Lawn Tractor he can have but he'll have to drive it from CA to NJ . . . Doesn't really matter that I don't have one, tell him he can trade me the boat for it, then I'll trade that for a lawn tractor and then I'll give that one to him. Does the mental picture of Forrest Gump on his lawn tractor help any with this? I'm flippin' cryin' here. Well worth your aggravation from my perspective :p :D

Think about it like this, you may end up giving away your lawn tractor just to make him go away. It's quite possible this system has worked for him before . . . ;) It's kinda like Bob Newhart and Larry, Darell and Darell, except it took three of them to equal the idiocy of your special friend. Or like Green Acres, but that was a whole town's worth. Wasn't there a lawn tractor in Dumb and Dumber? LMAO

If I was the guy at the marina, I would have tried my best just to sell the sucker a pair of oars. Would have been the quickest cheapest way to get that boat in the water :D

I agree this post is priceless :D
