gear case problems after 200 hrs

Just been told that I need a whole new lower unit for my 2002 fitch 250hp after only 200hrs. Seems a little ridiculous, has anyone else had this problem with the evinrudes? Of course the warranty ran out a couple of weeks ago.

Did you hit anything with it? If so! that could be your problem. If you hit something, tell them right up front. They will more than likely know anyway.

What happened that its so bad it cant be fixed? <br /><br />What kind of a boat is it on? Does it have a foot throttle?

It's on a 33ft Donzi, powered by a pair of 250s.<br />No idea what caused it but my mechanic thinks he may be able to rebuild it. He's talking to the Evinrude dealer, to see if they can do anything for me, he's really surprised as well. No foot throttle.

Your mechanic is not an Evinrude dealer? They arent going to do anything for you if he isnt a dealer. Why not take it to an Evinrude dealer and see what can be done?

Was it full of water, I went through this last year with my 250. I have to suck it up and admit it was likely my fault. I changed the oil and tightened the plugs as tight as possible with a screwdriver. Gearcase filled with water and it locked up solid. Dealer checked all seals with vacuum pump and pressure test they all were good. I have snce did tests of my own. Put in one plug pressure test empty gearcase and put soapy water on other plug and it bubbled, then tighened the hell out of it with wrench on screwdriver and bubbles stopped. Bottom line those plugs have to be very very tight.

Habbi,<br /><br />I thought you said about a year ago that you installed the Rapair gearcase monitor that has warning lites if there is low oil, water, or metal chips inside the gearcase.
