gear case removal 1983 70 hp merc

I have a 1983 merc 70 hp attempting to replace the water pump. I have the lower case dropped about one inch wont move any further. book says to remove upper reverse locking cam and nylon spool. How do I do this?

Roger<br /><br />I don't think there is anything else to remove on the 83. <br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=010967 <br /><br />The shift shaft pushes into a plastic spline and the Rev cam mechanism is attached to the shift shaft. You need to use a wood block and mallet and belt it off with care.

Thanks I came to that conclusion its on there pretty tight

It would have a SS Drive shaft and the corresponding splines on the crankshaft may be a little rusty. When you replace it, clean up the splines and apply grease or neversieze. Not too much as it may cause pre-load that can damage the crankshaft.
