gear case removal

have 1995 johnson 40 hp mdl. j40tlere that i cannot figure out how to disconnect shift rod from to remove gearcase for water pump service. any help appreciated...thanks in advance...captn-tin

Remove the port side lower engine cover to gain easy access to the (lever to shift rod screw) below the bottom carburetor. Note TLERE= 1994
