gear grinding questions johnson

just baught this boat figured out today it didnt have reverse. it trys but u can just hear it grinding away im wondering if i should get a whole new lower unit or try and put a new gear in there or somthin..how would u do it? any thoughts highly appreciated 88 johnson 120 v4

disconnect the shift cable at the motor and try to shift manaully. very possible you have a bad shift cable. also could be mis adjusted shift rod, if the lower unit had been off for service.

Concur, could easily be an adjustment, which of coarse is alot less than a new lower.

Mine did that and a couple turns of the trunion(knurled knob on shift cable) took care of it.

Always do the free stuff first, put it in reverse and note which way the cable moves then adjust the trunion that dirrection, use small adjustments till you get it.

When you shift it hsould be a swift deliberate action, don't "ease" it in to gear, very hard on the lower.

that was it didnt try it in water but that prop is locked in reverse spinning flywheel. thanks for the help i was thinkin the worst.what would i do without u knowledgable people thank you. wouldnt have thought of that i learned somthin
