Hi
So long story short I didn't drain my leg on my 1963 Merc 500, and came to find the prop pushed out this spring.

The $140 "BEARING-CARRIER-ASSEMBLY" is cracked in 2 spots, which I'll need, along with new bearings and rings.

Also the $5 "Threaded keeper-Ring" as best I can call it, is toast. the threads are Fubar, thanks to Ice I assume.

I've been told I need to use a rod and put some kind of pin in the bottom of the leg, from the top. Which I can imagine isn't easy. Yet it is a 63' so its all nice and basic.

Can someone tell me what parts I'll need, and summarize the Repair for me? Is there other parts inside the leg, that are likely broken? I have yet to pull it off and look myself. Please help me save my summer :D

your fubarred lock ring looks like it has the lower housing aluminum cast threads ripped out and still attached, if thats the case its ebay time on some parts, maybe even a blown engine then all your parts will be in one package. Find s/n then you can find correct years of matching parts.

I bought a 1963, 650 years ago with a cracked lower unit, due to freezing. I went to a local boat junk yard, (now gone) with lower unit in hand. Thought I hit the jackpot with a Alpha lower unit off an I/O, wrong. The Alpha used a larger bearing under the water pump. Well that didn't stop me. I worked in a large factory and having acess to the machine shop, I bored the bearing housing larger and installed a bushing to fit the 650 bearing to it. Not much help to you, but all things are possible. The cracked cage parts will interchange.
