gear lube coming out of exhaust?

i noticed that after letting the boat sit for almost 2 weeks that it had dripped a few drops of gear lube out of the exhaust port.

previously when i checked/changed the lower unit fluid it had gotten water in it, since i didnt have new seals for the plugs i used silicon which worked. the drip i found looked like it was fresh lube, no signs of water. time for new shaft seals?

Oh and its a 1976 25 hp evinrude.

are you sure it is gear lube, the will also drip gunk from the exhaust housing. smell it. gear lube has a very distinct smell.

On a 76 the likley hood of gearlube coming out of the exhaust outlet is very slim.What you have is exhaust residue.It will most likely have a gassy smell not the funky gearlube smell.

Yup, exhaust residue more than likely.
If in question, especially since winter is on its way, change the gear lube and see if its milky from water contamination.

Get those fill/drain plug gaskets. You're looking for trouble with silicone.

That gearcase expands and contacts with temperature. Silicone will not last.

it smelled pretty distinctly like gear lube. that rotten stinky egg smell. ive never seen it before though. i was going to switch out to my spare lower unit since the current one had one of those manatee protecting fins on it and whatever bonehead put it on didnt do it right, now the skeg is ate up from a bolt hole. i'll get into it in a few days.

I have also seen odd fluid come out of my 75' 9.9 Ev. I thought it was gear oil to. Since it has been sitting all summer I will know more in a couple weeks when I put it in the water for fall.
