gear lube in bellow

Hello Im new to iboats and I have a qustion ? I pulled off the lower unit on 120HP. merc 1983 and found gear lube in the bellow area. Is this normal.

Are you sure it was gear lube, or was it just grease? It is normal to see grease in the gimbal bellows as some grease sligns from the gimbal bearing. However, if it was oil, then you have a leak most likely around the driveshaft yoke on the unit.

I am not an expert but I just had my boat fixed for a gear oil leak. Turns out the bellows was found full of oil when the stearn drive was removed. The mechanic had to replace the yoke and the yoke seal. Hope this helps.

:(there was about 1/2 inch of oil, just over the ribs on the bellow.

sounds like you'll need to replace the yoke and seal. Had to do the same thing this year on mine. It's not a terribly hard fix, but you'll need a special tool to get the large castle nut off.
