How much gear lube is needed to fill the resevior when I change the premium gear lube in the lower unit so I know how much to buy. The key on the flywheel was sheared and it threw the timing off and i had disconnected the kill switch wire while I was troubleshooting the timer base and powerpack and i forgot to reattach it , that's why it wasn't shutting off with the key. does anyone know the quantity of gear lube that it will hold . 1977 evinrude 140

Just put it in the bottom hole till it comes out the top hole and it is full, it really is that simple.

I'm sure there is an actual answer like 22.68OZ but I just fill it up till it comes out then pop in the top plug, then the bottom and you are good to go.

This is done of coarse with the engine down in the running position, if the engien were tipped up if would be possible to overfill it.

Try going to a marina that works on that engine and ask them how much you'd need. Then buy the lube from them because they helped you.
Or just buy a bunch, and return the unopened containers, or save them for the next change.
The first time you do this, you'll get an idea how much you'll need.
