Gear Lube

My 1978 85HP Evinrude calls out Hi-Vis Lube for the lower unit. I see no indication of what viscosity it might be; my question is, can I use any gear lube in say the 80W-90 range without adverse effects?

Go to wally world and get some outboard specific gear lube.

Hi Vis is OMC/BRP older, standard brand of 75-90 marine gearcase oil. BRP has newer, superior products now that are synthetic blends and 100% synthetic.

Generally, the standard outboard gearcase oils are OK for non-high- performance use.
