Gear lube

Do y’all have a gear lube preference? I’ve got a 6 hp Evinrude, and I am going to change it out.

Use OMC / BRP product ----HI-VIS----Model # of your motor is ?----The older 6 HP have a totally different gearcase compared to the newer models.

A very good precisely built gearcase.-----But these gearcases suffer from the fact that the driveshaft is used as a bearing surface.-----And since 1966 it has not been big enuff ( 0.432 ) in diameter.----The 54 to 65 cases had a shaft above the pinion that was 0.550" in diameter.

To answer your original question.

I use hi-vis but I have lots. If the motor was well cared for and wasn't used much then spend the money and buy that. If it's old and not well cared for just use automotive gear oil and change it more.

A 50 year old motor only has so much time left.

Many of these 6 HP motor built in the 1970's will outlast the modern motors.

If my motor is in very good condition, I go with what the mfgr recomends, even if it costs more, it is worth it !! Now, if the motor is a beater and only used ocassionally, I use Walmart Super Tech and have had good sucess with it.

This motor is nice for its age. It’s not mint. I’d say it’s a fairly low hours motor. 2-3 pulls and it roars like a lion every time.

I use automotive gear oil EP 80-90W in all cases with no red metal in.
Cases that has bronze parts such as bushings etc I use marine gear oil 80-90W.
EP gear oils affect the bronze parts and "eat" it up.
The most important thing is check the gear case and gear oil for water intrusion and if milky oil change it especially if storing it in cold areas.
If water in it it maybe will freeze during the winter then the engine is shot.
To expensive to repair.

These 6 HP motors are really well built.-----Have taken many of them apart.----Crankshaft bushings in the block , piston rings and needle bearings on the rods rarely show any signs of wear.-----Water on the needle bearing is what destroys these motors.

Yes we know....pretty sure some day (hope it's a long time from now) they going to bury one right next to you.
