Gear not working

I have 1988 Thompson Cutlass boat. I took to shop for normal maintenance (oil flush). I went in water and it ran great until all of a sudden the boat stopped. I was able to start boat fine and put it in wake but as soon as put it in gear, it tries to run then dies.
I saw in a different thread that gear cable might be loose. Is this the case on my boat or is it something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you told us who made the boat. Now, what engine does it have? I doubt it's one of the oddball outboards we deal with in this forum. If it's an I/O boat, then we have a forum for that. If your boat has an outboard motor, then there will be a forum for that brand of outboard.

The folks in the proper forum for your boat's engine will be able to help you.

OK, I did some research. Your boat has an inboard/outboard engine. Go to the I/O forum and ask there. But they'll still want to know which engine you have, so check that out. It should say what engine if you look at the top of the engine.
