I just purchased a 1975 Evinrude 2 HP motor. I would like to change the gear oil. I can see the screw on the bottom of the shaft but I can't find the upper screw? Does anyone have experiences in changing the gear oil in these engines? Thanks

It should be just below the ventilation plate. At least my 74 Johnny was.

Attached is a pic of the lower unit. The screw you see in the picture is the only one I see.

I had a 1986 Evinrude Jr., that only had one screw in it. I seem to remember laying it on it's side and slowly filling it thru the same hole that you drained it from.

Just noticed, thread is over two years old, you should start a new thread instead of reviving one this old.

To clear this up and hopefully put it back to bed, remove the single screw, dump the oil out, and position it hole-up and fill it with an ordinary oiler can. Use 80-90 weight outboard gear oil. It doesn't hold much.

hi bbstacker1 and F_R

for both of your experience:

for this kind of motor. there is only one screw on the bottom, so you use the same hole to drain the old oil out
and fill in the new oil in? (using 80-90 weight outboard gear oil)?

so the air would eventaully come out from the hole?

thank you so much I will do that.
