Hello,
I have two questions
Today I tried to replace my lower unit gear oil. I removed th top two screws one said vent and the other said fill. The screws had what looked like a washer or gasket of some sort which was all chewed up. Should I replace them?

In order to drain the gear oil I loosened the pivot screw by accident. I didn't remove it all the way. I turned it back in snug. Then I put the motor in rear and tried to move the prop and the flywheel moved. Then I tightened it the rest of the way. So all is good right??

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Gear oil change

I did the same thing when changing mine last season. Everything was fine. I need to change again for this season and will remove the same screw again. If my memory serves me right removing this screw is the only way to get it to drain without turning motor upside down, or removing LU.

First answer is yes you should replace the washers. Pick them up at any boat parts place.

Second answer is sound like you got lucky with the pivot screw but i would run the motor on muffs before taking it out just to be safe.

Re: Gear oil change

I have a 1990 force 120 (new purchase) and I need to change the gear oil but im not sure which bolt it is to drain it..?

it seems like the previous owner over filled it because it leaks oil out when its running and when i removed the "fill" screw it was completly full. I can't seem to get the "vent" screw off so i guess im going to have to find a large flat head to break it loose.

According to my Seloc manual drain plug in on the bottom of the lower unit behind the skeg. If you get at least two screws out you will be fine. Just remember to refill with new oil from the bottom until it comes out the top hole. Good luck.

First off you cant over fill the unit it is completely filled. Your bottom screw on the right side of the lower unit is your drain screw. If you cant get the vent screw out you will have to fill from the drain screw. Fill till it starts to come out the top fill screw hole. Then quickly replace the drain screw let it sit for a few so air bubbles will rise to the top. Then finish topping off. The screws should all have a nylon washer you need to replace them with new ones. If you get the vent screw out then refill the unit from the fill screw hole till it comes out the vent hole. let it settle then top off if necessary. The lower unit is completely full.
