Gear oil in u joint bellows

Hi guys, I have just pulled my drive for the first and I have gear oil in the ujoint bellows.Can you get me going back in the right direction? Also I have found just a it of water in the bell housing cavity where the shift shaft resides.Thanks-Blair

Sounds like you need to pressure/vac check your drive and re-seal if necessary.

I'm guessing this is the Alpha 1 in your sig line?

Gear oil in the ujoint bellows means your input shaft seal is leaking. That will need to be replaced. How do the ujoints look? How does the gimbal bearing feel? You said this is the first time removing the drive...in how long? It should be done yearly.

If you head here, into the Mercruiser manual section, you'll see the service manuals. I'm not that familiar with these manuals but your drive serial number would make finding the correct manual easier. I think it is #6 but I could be wrong depending on your drive. It covers everything you need to know for fixing the seal.

the ujoints look great and the gimbal as well,smooth and no play front to back.The gimbal appears serviced. I just got the boat this summer and this is my first inspections of the drive.HT,what does resealing entail I have all of the stuff to do the impeller,so is that what you mean? Blair

You'll need new seals to change the impeller yes, but you also need to change the input shaft seal (the seal at the front/top of drive around the driveshaft). It is leaking which is why you are getting gear lube in your bellows.

Yes, you will need the BIG bearing retainer spanner to do that job.
