Gear oil leak 1985 9.9 Evinrude

I have gear oil coming from a hole that is on the left side , near front of the motor, above the gearing . This would be as the motor is mounted on the boat and you are looking at the back of the motor. It does not seem to be leaking from the rear of the motor around the prop, so I am guessing the prop shaft seals are good. I looked at the gear oil before running the motor on muffs and it showed no indication of having water in it. Any ideas on what seal is leaking ?

Many different answers / opinions will be given.-----I do not know the maintenance history of your motor.------I do not know the tools and ability that lives in your workshop.--------This could well be normal , from oil mixed with the fuel.----No water in the gear oil is a good sign.----I own more than one motor like that.-----I would not hesitate to install new oil seal kit if I knew seals were 35 years old.----If you do not know how old the impeller is you should install a new one.----Allows you to look for signs of oil around the water pump.

It pumps water really good. I check the gear oil again today and there is no water in it. Gear oil is blue- not even brown or milky It was 27 degrees here this morning and as the temp warmed up to about 35 n sun hitting the motor- the oil/water mixture started leaking out of the hole I described earlier. Maybe the guy I bought it from replaced seals and it had residual oil in the gear case? It did show some yellow oily mix in the prop this morning , but nothing but blue oil in the gear case when I removed the drain screw. Should I just run it?

Just run it.-----But remember these motors do NOT have an overheat warning / shutdown system.------They will overheat and run till they come to a " dynamic halt " and it results is expensive repairs.----Your call I say.

you are running in cold temps with sharp variations while running the engine then shutting it off possibly generating some condensation in the lower exhaust routing..and drain.

could be just sludge- crud oil and gas exhaust mixing and draining down and out. it also seems to come out the prop route (normal)

Thanks for your thoughts. I believe I will run it and keep a close watch on the gear oil to make sure Im not getting low or having water getting in.
