I have a 1986 johnson 40 with no power trim. it is leaking gear oil from the side. someone said there was a set screw missing. does anyone no anything about these? also when i pulled both the plugs to drain it there wasn't any water in it. however when i removed the plugs a little oil drip from the pump inlet. also does anyone know how to get the shift shaft out? i see no access area and i seperated it but it is still hung up on the shift shaft. also the shaf is in the very front og the motor. it runs through the steering pivot

More than likely what you are seeing is unburned fuel/oil.

Don't forget to replace the fill/drain plug seals.

The shift shaft disconnects under the carburetor(s).
