Gear oil leak

hi,
I just finished DE-winterizing my 1996 Force 75HP (Fogging oil burn out and change gear oil). I left the motor down to drain out the water and was about to raise it back up onto the support when I noticed on the bottom skeg there was a couple of drops of oil. I removed the prop and ran the motor in fwd and rev for about 10 minutes and could not see any leaks. I dried off the motor and let it sit and about an hour later I checked and again I had a couple drops of oil. Looking closer it appears like it is leaking around the bearing carrier... I looked at the manual but it does not list a gasket in the schematic.
Has anyone else had an issue like this or could someone recommend how to fix this issue.

Added Picture looks like the left side and the oil is dripping from the bottom Carrier plate bolt.

Thanks in advance

Re: Gear oil leak

Could be the prop shaft seal. Is the oil gear oil by smell or is it black and smell like fuel?? Alot of times it is just unburned fuel mix and probably from running a bit rich.

Re: Gear oil leak

I was thinking it was the unburned fogging oil, but was unsure I would have thought It would have 'washed' out after 10 minutes. I left for about 3 hours from the original post and checked the bowl with the paper towel and it has a significant amount of oil in it. I just brought it in for a picture, I smelled it as suggested and it smells like fuel not gear oil... Hopefully this is a good thing? Just fogging oil from the storage?

Thanks so much for the reply

Re: Gear oil leak

The only way to check for leaking gear oil is to drain the lower.
If it's leaking oil?? It will be replaced with water.
When you fog a motor,it adds stuff that won't burn but will find a way out and end up draining to the prop area.
After you run it for a while it will flush it out.
Outboards usually leak something!!!

Re: Gear oil leak

Thanks
I got the tell tale green hue in the bucket that told me for sure it was indeed the fogging oil leaking out. There was no water in the lower, that is what confused me a bit. It was the first time wintering this motor so I didn't have a clue what to expect.

Thanks again

Re: Gear oil leak

JerryJerry,

1985 Force85 - if I have LU fluid leaking out from behind the prop and down the skeg, do I just need the two oil seals shown on the prop side of the needle bearing as shown in Dons schematic?

I know its a short question to a potentially major problem, but Im hoping for the best.

Big thanks.
