gear oil leaking

1979 Evinrude 85hp 85999R

Noticed gear oil leaking out the bottom of the foot behind the prob assy. I am guessing a seal got cut when I had the fishing line all tangled up around the shaft. Anyone know what is involved to change out this seal?

First, determine if it is gear oil, or unbuned fuel, and oil.

agree, pull the prop and make sure it is coming from the prop shaft and not the housing around it.

Also drain the oil from the lower, if oil is getting out then water is getting in.

If it is tan or milky looking you have a seal leak, if it is still honey colored you are probably alright.
