Gear or Shift Problem

77 Johnson 115 .... When I go to put the dame thing into gear it will just click like it is trying to go into gear. I used a pair of pliers and helped and it went but will quickly jump out. Adjusted the cabel and nothing. My thinking is it is hydrolic shift assist thingy or gears that have something to do with the shift assist. I even lowered the RPMS all the way down tell it would almost die like 600 and same thing. It will go right into reverse. Any help before I take the lower unit apart and mess that up. Have not noticed any shavings in the gear lube. This motor rebuild has giving me hell.. :|

hope you didn't break your toe, never done one and looking at the manual don't want to.

There isn't really anything to that "shift assist" thing. The best thing is to start from the beginning. Drop the lower and set the shfit rod barrel. If that's off, it'll never be right no matter what you do with the cable.

A lot of times the barrel on that shift rod gets tightened when the gearcase is off for a water pump. It has a specific setting to make the linkage work correctly.

The connecting swivel at the top of the shift rod.

The shift rod is moved up for reverse and down for forward. If the barrel/swivel is set too tight, the linkage hits the floor of the lower cover and can't go down far enough to shift.

I have adjusted one up with a stiff wire with a 3/4 inch 45 degree bend at the end, turning the swivel counter clockwise, but you have to be very patient because it will take a while to do it that way.

Well I feel like an idiot that makes sense. I am fixing to go out back that barrel off some and see if that fixes it, If that does not what else could cause this problem.

adjusted the barrel housing to the point it would not go into reverse. Still just clicks and will pop in but any load and it pops out. What next this suxs.
