Gear shift problem

Hi guys, me again, with my 30hp 1985 Evinrude. You may remember i've spoken before about a hard to find neutral, things seem to have deteriorated since last time. If I disconnect the shift rod and shift using the arm, it's ridiculously easy to go flying straight through neutral, which I'm sure isn't right! Engagement is fine, but it literally has to be eased out of gear. Thanks in advance

well I don't know that engine in detail<br />but on all the engines I have there is a little rod atched to the handle it has groves and a spring thathold the shifter in place until you shift it.<br />and as many will soon say get a manual it helps alot.<br />anyway look when the shifter on the engine is moving when you shift it maybe your spring brokegood luck.
