Re: gearbox pressure trester

Stevens Instruments sells the most popular tester, but to tell the truth I find that they are relied upon way too much. If you find water in the gearcase, there's no need to test unless the unit is fairly new. All of the seals wear and only replacing the one that is leaking now does nothing about the one that will start leaking as soon as you replace it. It's a weakest-link kind of thing. The weakest seal will leak first. But the rest are weakened with age and wear as well. So by replacing the weakest one, you end-up following the weakness chain right to the end when you have finally replaced them all. The testers should be used for making sure a reseal job has accomplished the goal, or on newer units that might have one bad seal.

The MityVac 04050 is a much more versatile tool and allows both pressure and vacuum tests. You can use it for a wide variety of related tests such as those for the recirculation check valves. It is available at thetoolwarehouse. net.
