Hi ive bought a 60hp Johnson 60TLCNM
I got it relatively cheap, it was from a mechanic who said it had a gremlin in the engine. I think ive got rid of that gremlin after an extensive fault searching and rectifying but after a test ride where the motor now goes grand i noticed the gearoil is watery.
Ive changed the two top seals below the water pump, the thick o-ring in the shiftshaft casing and the gasket below it but it was still watery after the latest outing.
Ive removed the prop and noticed this fishing line around the propshaft. Its not my fishing line as i havent trusted it enough to get me out to the blue yonder for fishing yet.
What im wondering is can i remove this seal and replace it without needing to pull the carrier.
The inadequate manual of mine says removing the carrier requires split ring pliers, fast moving objects, danger and safety goggles so if i dont have to i dont want too!

If you’re afraid of losing the Snap ring (flying to parts of your shop unknown to man or beast), you can always place a small towel over the area while removing it. That way if it does take flight, you will not have to look for it... I know one day when cleaning out the corners of my shop I will locate things I’ve long since forgotten about from parts flying that way. :D

Have you pressure and vacuumed checked the G/C to see if it's actually leaking there ??

I havent pressure tested as i live a ferry ride with my trailer to get to the mainland so i figure its a lot cheaper replacing the seals instead of taking it to a pressure testing place and paying ferry tickets for car and trailer and labour time.
I can order seals online and they turn up the next day.
I have a tank at home but no pump or fitting which i assume you put into a drain screw?
I cant think of anywhere else itd be leaking as the driveshaft was smooth and so was the shiftshaft and the screw plugs were new too.....
I wouldnt of thought the o-ring on the bearing carrier would go much at all......?
The fishing line i just thought looked rather guilty... maybe just a red herring?

If I was in your situation I think I'd just re-seal the G/C completly and then run it and keep checking the oil. Cheaper than ferry boat tickets.:joyous:
