Gearbox type

Greetings all.<br /> I have a 1973. 85 hp Johnson (Model 85ESL-73M, Serial # J3856855). Is there any way to tell from the model/SN whether this engine has a mechanical shift or a mechanical shift with hydrolic assistance. <br />Thanks,<br /> Frank

Looks like a Hydro-Electric shift to me.<br /><br />Just look up the BRP website, they have a section with exploded diagrams of everything from 1968 onwards.<br /><br />A few thing to be aware of with these,<br /> <br />They default to forward when the engine isn't running<br /><br />The Lower unit MUST use BRB Premium Blend oil, it replaces the old OMC type "C". If you put normal gear-oil in, IT WILL NOT WORK.<br /><br />Do you have the controls for the motor? If not and you are looking for some, make sure you get the right type, you don't want the Selectric/Electramatic controls. They are for completly different setup. You must get controls for HYDRO-ELECTRIC shift.

Lark,<br /> Please excuse my ignorance. I've been looking through a Seloc manual and it lists an "electric shift", "mechanical shift", and "mechanical shift with hydro assist." It's definately not a electric shift. It has a shifter cable.<br />Thanks,<br /> Frank

It is a mechanical shift with hydraulic assist.<br /><br />There is a small oil pump in the lower unit for this. It sits forward of the water pump.
