Gearcase Extension Leak

I did a search and couldn't seem to find what I was looking for.

So I have been slowly working on this old outboard and keep finding minor "speed bumps."

1959 18HP Johnson Seahorse FDL-13

I had it running the other day after rebuilding the carb and adjusting the speed nozzles. After running it for awhile, I took it out of the bucket and noticed an oil leak coming from the bottom of the gearcase extension. I have not taken it apart yet as Im not exatcly sure what is required. Looking at the parts manual, it appears there is no seal between the lower gearcase and the extension.

Any suggestions on what needs to be done?

Re: Gearcase Extension Leak

That is most likely unburned oil from inside of the exhaust housing.

You don't need to do anything. Perfectly normal. Those 50s Johnnyrudes will put an amazing amount of crud in the water when running in a bucket or barrel. It's quite shocking.

On the water, you'll never notice it.
