gearcase oil pump timing

I have a 50esl72c johnson motor, I have the gearcase torn down and reinstalling parts, the manual says to put the oil pump gear dots the same as when it came out, just wondering if there is a procedure for installing the gears if you have no reference point

The 72 hydro-electric? The oil pump only goes in to where the shift solenoids can power it. If it's not sat right the pinion gear probably wouldn't fit on the drive shaft.
