Gearcase plug spinning

I decided to change my gearcase oil today because I'm not sure if it was ever done. It is a 15hp 2 stroke evinrude '88. After getting the oil in and putting the plugs back in the lower plug just keeps spinning. I'm sure I didn't crossthread it and it will neither go in or out. It just spins. What am I looking at here? No oil has been leaking out of the plug. Is it good to run for the time being? (fishing trip coming up tommorow). Thanks for any help.

You'll get water into the oil as sure as eggs are eggs, but there is also a danger that vibration will make the plug fall out!

With smalll engine that I was not going to run at high speed I'd stick some good waterproof self adhesive tape over it. But I'm not sure I'd risk it at planing speeds.

Stripped.
It needs a helicoil, I'd let a machine shop take care of it.
Meantime, use the oars.

You don't have 2 nylon seals in there by accident do you?

Oh nevermind, I see you can't get it OUT...

...where's my coffee?
