Gearcase seals

Hey guys,
I'm in the process of replacing the clutch dog in my MQ11. I have new spaghetti seal and a new seal for the propshaft. I'm at the point of closing up the gear case, and wondered if I should use gasket sealer on the metal to metal surfaces, or just rely on the spaghetti seal to keep water out of the gear case. I'm sure you guys are shaking your heads at my ineptness, but what is an obvious answer to you is valuable info to me as I'm new to this, and believe me, I deeply appreciate all the input from all the folks who've helped out during the process of getting this outboard up and running.

I use Permatex #2 around the skeg and also around the large o-ring on the prop shaft seal bushing. I also dab Permatex on all the skeg bolts. I put it in the depression where the spaghetti seal goes - it holds it in place, and then on top of the spaghetti seal.

Hi jp. Yes, you should use some gasket sealant on the spaghetti seal itself, both surfaces of the clamshell gear case as well, especially around the bolt holes as well as the perimeter of any oil seals in the kit. The OMC recommended sealant is 3M 847, but it's kind of pricey hard to find at regular stores. Lots of folks use Permatex Ultra Black with good success and it's available at almost any auto store for just a few bucks. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

Btw, how's the weather up there? I used to live in Boone and I imagine it will be getting near the peak of Fall colors soon.

I live about 25 minutes West of Charlotte. Right now we're in the mid 80's, but we had about 2 weeks of fall weather before summer came back for one last time. Next week is supposed to be back to normal temps for this time of the year.
I got everything sealed up and back together. I'll take her out in the morning and see if the new clutch dog did the trick(wouldn't stay in forward gear). I did a tune up, carb kit, new fuel pump etc. This forum has been awesome and I want to thank you guys again for all the input and for your patience. I'm new to all this, but am enjoying the learning aspect. I'll let you know how things turn out.

Good luck on the sea trials. Keep us posted. Oh yeah, I see you're in Gastonia. If memory serves that's NASCAR country, right?

I had one motor that after a LU rebuild would kick out of forward. I was able to adjust the shift handle to allow the shift rod to move (engage) better. Never had an other problem.

Others here have turned the dog around with success.

Commander, Captain, Vice Admiral and all the rest,
just came back from the river, and am happy to say the repairs worked like a charm. The old outboard runs like a scalded dog! Thanks again to all who chimed in for all your advice and encouragement. And yes, Vice Admiral, this is NASCAR country for sure. It's a huge draw in this area, and the state as far as that goes.

Woot! Woot! Glad she ran well for you. I bet a lot of the old timer mechanics in the area will get a kick out of seeing it on the water. They can appreciate how neat these old motors really are. Who knows, maybe you can start the NASCAR vintage outboard series. Happy boating!
