I replaced my outdrive that had failed and I must have screwed up somewhere, b/c I got the boat in the water and nuetral was reverse and forward was nothing and reverse stalled the engine. Is this because I didn't line up the shift shaft coupler correctly? I had the remote in forward drive when I pulled the old one and when I put the replacement on, but have to admit I didn't know what I was doing as far as shift alignment. Also the drive I put on is from a 228 hp and mine is 260 (both 1.50r) Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated. Thanks. If this is a repeat post, please direct me to the posting -!

You have to have the drive itself in forward also as you slide it on and make sure the shift shaft roller stays in the cable slide

It sounds like you have a merc gen 1 drive this should give you something to look at

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6A2R3.PDF

tommays

It would sure help to know what kind of drive you are talking about. Are you sure you didn't buy a counter-rotating drive?

Sorry - it is a Merc. Gen 1 I believe, and after reading the link from above, I'm guessing that's where I went wrong. I hope I didn't screw anything up by failing to align the shift coupler and the drive. Time to take it apart again. :(

Thanks again

The 228 is an late 70s,early 80s 305 chevy with a type 1 pre-alpha/mr type drive.Does it (the drive) have lifting eye sticking out the top?

Yes it does have the lifting eye - Does this mean I can't use it?

Re: Gears out of Whack!

I think what I'll do is replace the lower unit to my alpha with the pre-alpha lower (I had a gaping hole in my lower - causing cavitation.) mercstuff.com says they will fit. Then I don't have to worry about the mount being different to the gimbal.

Am I better off using the gimbal from a pre-alpha - rather than what I described above?

The Alpha will bolt-onto the pre-Alpha bellhousing.Be sure it is a gen. 1,knott a 2! Far as the Gimbal(bearing),they R the same.
