The hull of my fiberglass boat is not too bad, just alot of very fine scratches. What should I do to get rid of the gel coat scratches, and then what kind of wax or polish should I use?

Re: gel coat scratches

You can sand and buff the scratches out, but then you'll need to buff the rest of the boat to match. Depending on the size and location of the craft is may not be too tough a job..just a thought :)

There is alot of input on buffing. Just do a search for compounding etc.
I personally like the 3m Restorer & wax. There is one for light and heavily oxidized surfaces.
As for wax coat--COLLONITE and COLLONITE 920 prep is the best on the market. After a full season the water still beads like pin-heads.
I have used them all---and COLLONITE is the easiest and has the best results. You basically wipe it on in a circular motion--then wipe it off BEFORE it hazes. I believe it is also an aircraft wax.
Michael

Skicat,

Is it scratched, or is it crazed? Big difference in how you deal with one or t'other.

Good general knowledge site:
http://capndsboatshed.com/hullrepair.htm

Here in the back of beyond we've never heard of Collonite? I thought that's what women got! Is it a wax - or a buffing compound? Any info on this please?

Skicat,

Do a search on yahoo. Collonite Wax
The 920 is a hand buffing compound that prepares the surface. (It removes black marks and blemishes.) Then you apply the wax.
This is by far the BEST wax I have used.
I like it because you do not let it dry before removing. Therefore, no sore arms.
