So I have looked around to try and find the answer and have come up blank. Is there a difference in bottom paint and gel-coat?? I have a 16ft Bayliner with an 85Hp force. Its on the water a few hrs at a time.. So do I need bottom paint. Or will above water like paint do for me. Being that my boat is in the water so short of a time. Do I go with bottom paint? Above water line paint? Or Gel-Coat???

There is a big difference from bottom paint and gel. There are Alot of different types of bottom paint first off. Niether Gel or BP is water Proof ( they will not keep water from intrution for periods of imersion ).

For your period of time Na.. you dont need to bottom paint. just leave it as it is with its gel bottom. Power wash it when needed and keep it clean.

If you are having trouble cleaning the stains off the bottom try "Bartenders Friend" It will not scratch and cleans great. My wife uses it in the shower and on the glass cook stove and I clean the botton of my 1975 Glastron 175. Works great.

Re: Gel-Coat Vs Bottom Paint?

I have found "snow bowl" toilet bowl cleaner works well with alot of stains.

If the stains are very bad right now .. you might look into " on off " acid wash.
The stuff is toxic and burns. protect yourself. Also it seems to work better if you put it on just as it comes out of the water before you pressure wash.
You might be better off to see how much a yard would charge to clean it with acid.

just bought a 1985 Ranger 375V and the clearcoat/gel coat, (I do not know the difference) is flaking off the cap. I researched and found that wet sanding will take this loose stuff off and it is progressing nicely. The question I have is...can I clear coat this when I finish removing the old or do I just need to was it and seal it good and buff it out. I can tell the difference between the base and the stuff I am removing because one is slick and the other not so much. Any advice or direction on how to proceed would be much appreciated.

HI Muncher.....

welcome to iboats !

it is always better to start your own thread than ask a question in another persons thread....(its called hijacking) ......the reason is....that it gets very confusing to the op.

no worries......just start a thread ....I suggest you add pictures of what you are working on.....and we can guide you.

cheers....and again......welcome to iboats
