Gel coat vs Epoxy

I'm restoring my '79 Champion bass boat. I'm pulling off the cap, replacing all rot, and rebuilding old fiberglass damage. The whole thing needs to be refinished, not only the hull but also old holes in the cap from previous trolling motors and accessories.

Freshwater-only bass boat. Only sits in the water for a maximum of about 16 hours. Trailer has slippery plastic skids on the bunks.

My main question concerns refinishing the hull. For cost reasons, and because I like to do it myself, I'm leaning toward epoxy rather than gel-coat.

I see from the "paint thread" that Interlux epoxy products are specially made for boats. (But I did not find the answer I need from that thread.) I read that their "prime-kote" epoxy primer is not for use below the water line. Does this apply to all boats, or just those that are moored in the water for long periods?

I'm not after a show-quality finish. Mostly protection for the hull and good, slick planing surface. Is gel-coat better than epoxy for my needs? If so, is it worth the extra cost of taking to someone else?

To answer your question, it is ok to use as long as your boat is NOT left in the water for more than two or three days at a time. You might also want to take a look at Pettit EasyPoxy. Lots of guys on here have used it with GREAT success. I'm gunna be using it on my Flamingo in the Spring based on what I have read here on iBoats.

Yes you can use Interlux paint to refinish your trailer boat. Many have done it with great results. The best option for the hull in my opinion is Interlux Perfection two part paint. It is more durable than their other paints and will hold up better to rolling on and off the trailer.
Interlux does not recommend it for below the water line use when the paint is going to be constantly immersed in water.

Are you going to have to make stringer, deck or transom repairs?

The thing about gel..Its way more durable then paint.. and repairability..

I suggest leave the bottom gel If you can..paint whatever else you like with whatever is within your cost/result can afford.

Peace .. YD.

Stringer... Maybe. There is rot in the bow where the bow eye was before it pulled out while winching onto the trailer.

Deck... No. It's solid. I inspected it thoroughly last season when I replaced the carpets.

Transom... Don't think so. It appears to be solid from what I can see through the rear opening. Inspection will tell once I remove the cap, which will expose the transom.
