I'm restoring my '79 Champion bass boat. I'm pulling off the cap, replacing all rot, and rebuilding old fiberglass damage. The whole thing needs to be refinished, not only the hull but also old holes in the cap from previous trolling motors and accessories.
Freshwater-only bass boat. Only sits in the water for a maximum of about 16 hours. Trailer has slippery plastic skids on the bunks.
My main question concerns refinishing the hull. For cost reasons, and because I like to do it myself, I'm leaning toward epoxy rather than gel-coat.
I see from the "paint thread" that Interlux epoxy products are specially made for boats. (But I did not find the answer I need from that thread.) I read that their "prime-kote" epoxy primer is not for use below the water line. Does this apply to all boats, or just those that are moored in the water for long periods?
I'm not after a show-quality finish. Mostly protection for the hull and good, slick planing surface. Is gel-coat better than epoxy for my needs? If so, is it worth the extra cost of taking to someone else?
